I take care of five international students, boys, from a Middle Eastern country. Their name for me is Ummu Esau, which translated means Mother of Jesus. Yes I know, but what they are really saying is that I am their christian Mom.
I clean their homes and help them with day to day stuff like paying bills, setting up appointments, college etc, things that we all take for granted and know how to do. I also am helping them assimilate into the American culture as I know first hand when I arrived in this country 21 years ago I was very intimidated.
Many conversations go like this.
Boys: Why do we have to tip?
Me: Because you're in America.
or
Boys: Why do we have to have car insurance?
Me: Because you're in America.
or
Boys: Why can't we smoke Hooka in our apartment?
Me: Because you're in America.
Yesterday I was at the home of my boys. As I walked in this poster was front and center of the living room.
Me: Why?
Boys: Because we're in America.
Touché
And it's a wonderful place to be!
ReplyDeleteLOL. You taught them well.
ReplyDeleteThat is hilarious!!! They can't smoke Hooka in the states? I did not know that, probably because I don't smoke Hooka. I knew a few people in Japan that did. The boys are lucky to have you. Now, when are they getting you a Coach bag? ;)
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome. Touche' indeed! And kudos for taking care of them and helping them acclimate to our crazy American life.
ReplyDeleteLOL, that is priceless.
ReplyDelete@ KoC ~ indeed it is
ReplyDelete@ Ant ~ maybe too well eh?
@ Meg ~ they can smoke Hooka, but not in apartments. Smoke free, well supposed to be and yeah totally agree on the Coach bag thing.
@ Brooke ~ They are a great group of boys who have way too much money.
@ David ~ I was laughing hysterically for at least 20 minutes. Oy Vey!
You can definitely smoke hookah in the states. I've been to a couple hookah bars. Albeit they're not a booming business and they're pretty sketchy-looking, but they're legal alright. But haha touche alright. In the Middle East I'm sure that poster is NOT even allowed... Watching Sex and the City 2 convinced me that to live in Islamic countries as a woman is close to living in a draconian nunnery.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes you taught them well :)
ha, ha -nice post, Lidia. I don't think you are a lush BTW. You are just an avid explorer of the bottoms of wine bottles.
ReplyDeleteWell. This proves that they are assimilating quite nicely. You should be proud of how well you're taught them.
ReplyDeleteThis was fun. You are an amazing woman.
ReplyDelete@ Leila ~ you can smoke Hooka in America just not in your rented apartment.
ReplyDelete@ David - Explorer. I like it. So much better than lush or bitch.
@ Vinny - I think so too... may have to deprogram them though when they go home to visit.
@ Pseudo - Glad it made you smile and thank you.
This is very funny! I couldn't really make out exactly what that poster is, but I have a good enough idea! LOL!
ReplyDeleteI love getting to know people from different cultures. I think America is a great place, but it would probably seem very "foreign" to a lot of people from other countries!cho
LOL! You've taught them well, my friend! - G
ReplyDeleteYOU should be a professor. You've clearly taught them impenetrable logic.
